Statement of the Tudeh Party of Iran: Tudeh Party of Iran Strongly Condemns the “Daesh” Terrorist Attacks in Iran

As reported by the mass media, about 10:30am local time today in Iran, in a concurrent terrorist act, the area around Khomeini’s tomb near Tehran’s Behesht-e Zahra cemetery and the parliament building in the centre of Tehran were attacked. The statement of the Ministry of Interior Affairs about the terrorist event today reads: “Today, two terrorist teams simultaneously attacked the outskirts of the Late Imam’s tomb and the administration building of the Islamic Majlis [parliament] and tried to disrupt the security of the country by such blind terrorist acts.”

In these operations, the terrorists who were armed with Kalashnikov automatic guns and pistols tried to achieve their anti-human goals through a surprise ambush and by using suicide explosive belts in order to inflict maximum casualties.  According to the released reports, the terrorists approached the public entrance of the parliament building under the guise of the members of public who want to meet with their member of the parliament, and after a clash with the security forces present there, tried to get into the main hall of the parliament. Amidst the shootout with the security personnel that followed, the assailants attacked those in the area where the members of public meet with the MP’s, and killed and injured several innocent people.

According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Interior Affairs, all six terrorists, from the two groups of attackers at the parliament building and at the Khomeini mausoleum, were killed after several hours of exchanging fire and the detonation of a suicide device. The websites affiliated with Daesh (Islamic State) and other reactionary anti-people forces in the region have also been trying to spread fear amongst the Iranian people by threatening to attack the centres of the country’s public transportation system and creating a “bloodbath”.

The Tudeh Party of Iran strongly condemns the criminal acts of the terrorists affiliated with the Daesh (IS) at Behesht-e Zahra cemetery and the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) building. According to the latest reports, 12 people were killed and 42 people were injured in these terrorist attacks.

In recent months, the Tudeh Party of Iran had repeatedly commented about the dangerous policies of the US imperialism and the regional reaction, including the Saudi regime, its reactionary allies, and Israel, and had warned about the fact that these regimes are organising and steering terrorist groups in the region. The fact that the Saudi’s Al-Arabiya news agency had announced the news about Daesh taking responsibility for the terrorist attacks of Tehran one hour sooner than the Amaq news agency (controlled by Daesh), leads to contemplation about the possibility of the involvement of Saudi Arabia in this tragedy. That Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud, the Deputy Crown Prince and Minister of Defence of Saudi Arabia, had threatened on May 2nd that his government would take the war inside the borders of Iran, cannot be coincidental.

Nine days ago, the Tudeh Party of Iran warned with concern that “…The threatening, irresponsible, and mainly unfounded words of Donald Trump, his close advisors, and his Ministers of Defence and State during the US election campaign of last year, and repeating the same in recent months, has placed our nation in a critical and dangerous position. The security and stability of our country has repeatedly been the target of hostile and targeted propaganda of the reactionary circles in the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and their regional allies in recent weeks.” (from Nameh Mardom, The Central Organ of the Tudeh Party of Iran, 29 May 2017)

In an analysis of the situation in the region, Nameh Mardom, the central organ of the Tudeh Party of Iran, had rightfully predicted that “…Although President Trump spoke about the urgency of fighting against terrorism, but it was clear that he considers this fight along the lines of the policies and slogans of Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf monarchies and targeting Iran. President Trump, while deliberately being silent about the fact that in recent decades the financial and human sources of Al-Qaeda and Daesh (IS) have been mainly provided by the Sunni Islamic countries, and particularly Saudi Arabia and its allies, in an exaggerated manner depicted the Islamic Republic of Iran as the main enemy, the devil in the Middle East, and the key source of violence in the region.”

Recognising the dangers that threaten our country and nation, the Tudeh Party of Iran had expressed that it “believes that the current situation in the Middle East and the extremely reckless positions and policies of Trump and other policy-makers of the United States could endanger peace in the Middle East and particularly in our country. Following a transparent diplomacy based on peace-making and protecting the vital interests of the nation and the working people of our country are the urgent needs of the current moment in order to neutralise such threats.”

The risk of new military conflicts in the regions is grave. We should not allow the reactionary forces ruling our country, the Guard Corps and military leaders, to put the stability, security, and sovereignty of our country at risk by provocative chanting, threatening rhetoric and taking theatrical retaliatory actions. A truly patriotic and wise rethinking of the current foreign policy of the country and stopping the intervention of armed forces and the sending of arms to the countries of the region, including to Syria and Iraq, are among the urgent necessities of the moment. “
